If your Google traffic has dipped while your rankings look the same, AI answers are a likely cause. In the most careful study so far, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, against 15% without one.

Google now writes an AI answer at the top of many results pages (AI Overviews) and offers a chat-style search (AI Mode). Both answer the question before the searcher reaches the links.

This guide to AI Overviews SEO covers the evidence, which businesses are most exposed, and a 30-day plan to stay visible. Part of the fix is technical (structured data and fast, clean pages), and that is built into every business website we make.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks? What the evidence says

Much of the noise on this topic comes from vendors selling a fix. The figures above come from Pew Research Center, which tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults during March 2025:

  • Users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without.
  • Users clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits.
  • That month, 18% of the searches in the study produced an AI summary.

Industry studies using other methods, such as Search Console data across large keyword sets, report large drops in click-through rate for top-ranking pages when an AI Overview appears. The numbers vary, but the direction is consistent: when Google answers the question itself, fewer people click.

Google disputes the scale of the harm and argues that the clicks it does send are higher quality. That may hold for some queries, but it is hard to verify from outside.

Which searches and businesses are most affected

Search type

Example

Exposure

Informational questions

"how long does a solar panel last", "what is a heat pump"

Highest: exactly what AI Overviews are built to answer

Local, ready-to-buy searches

"plumber near me", "car rental Dubai airport"

Lower: they still lead to map results, business profiles and calls

Branded searches

someone typing your business name

Lowest: they usually want your site or your phone number

Businesses that relied on blog posts answering generic questions feel this most.

How to stay visible in AI Overviews and AI Mode

1. Get cited: be the source the answer is built from

AI Overviews cite websites. The pages they cite tend to be clear, specific and easy to quote:

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph, plainly, before the detail.
  • Use real specifics: prices, timeframes, measurements, local regulations, named products. An AI can summarise generic content without credit; specific content is what it needs to cite.
  • Structure the page: descriptive headings, short paragraphs, tables for comparisons, numbered steps for processes.
  • Show who is behind it: a named author with real experience, an about page, contact details. Google's quality guidelines put weight on experience and trust.

2. Publish what only you can publish

AI summaries repeat what is already widely written. They cannot invent your data, case studies, prices or local knowledge. Original research, real project write-ups and first-hand comparisons are the content least likely to be replaced, and most likely to be cited.

(We practise this ourselves: our audit of 3,196 local businesses on Google Maps is the kind of page an AI answer can quote but not reproduce.)

3. Treat your Google Business Profile as a second homepage

For local businesses, the profile often matters more than the website. Hours, services, photos, reviews and your replies all feed what Google shows. Claim it, keep it current, and reply to reviews.

4. Make your site easy for machines to read

  • Structured data (Schema.org markup for your organisation, local business, services, FAQs, articles and products) tells search engines exactly what each page is about.
  • Fast, clean HTML that renders without heavy JavaScript is easier to crawl and quote. Our guide to Core Web Vitals and slow pages covers the speed side.
  • An `llms.txt` file is an emerging convention that gives AI tools a plain-text map of your site. It is not an official Google ranking factor and adoption is uneven, so treat it as a cheap extra, not a strategy.

5. Measure the right things

Rankings alone no longer tell the story. Track:

  • Clicks and impressions in Google Search Console, by page and query. Steady impressions with falling clicks point to a likely AI Overview casualty.
  • Branded search volume: are more people searching for your name?
  • Enquiries and calls, not just visits. Fewer, better-qualified visitors can still mean more customers.
  • Citations: search your key questions and note when your site appears as a source.

What to stop doing

  • Publishing thin articles to chase keywords. A page that restates what twenty others say now loses twice: the AI answers it, and nobody needs your version.
  • Mass-producing AI-written content. Google's spam policies explicitly target "scaled content abuse": many pages generated mainly to rank, whether by people or AI. Using AI to help write is fine; flooding a site with unhelpful pages is not.
  • Judging success by traffic alone. Some lost traffic was never going to convert. Focus on pages that lead to enquiries.

A practical 30-day AI Overviews SEO plan

  1. Week 1: In Search Console, list your top 20 pages by impressions. Mark which answer generic questions and which serve buyers.
  2. Week 2: Rewrite the opening of your five most important pages to answer the main question directly, and add the specifics (prices, steps, local details) only you can give.
  3. Week 3: Add or fix structured data, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, and check every page loads quickly on a phone.
  4. Week 4: Plan one piece of original content: a small survey, a price guide from your real jobs, or a project write-up.

The bottom line

AI answers are taking the easy clicks: generic questions anyone could answer. What stays valuable is what only your business can offer: real expertise, real data and a clear way to get in touch. Those are the sites AI answers keep citing and customers still click.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

Yes. Pew Research Center found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1%. Google disputes the scale of the harm.

How do I get my website cited in AI Overviews?

Answer the main question plainly in the first paragraph, then add specifics only you can give: prices, timeframes, local details and original data. Use clear headings, tables and steps, and a named author with real experience.

How can I tell if AI Overviews are affecting my traffic?

In Google Search Console, compare clicks and impressions by page and query. A page whose impressions hold steady while clicks fall is a likely AI Overview casualty.
