Gesture-based media player

Playback you control with your hands: hand tracking recognises gestures and maps them to media actions.

Built byAhsan Nadeem

About this project

The challenge

Control media playback with your hands instead of a keyboard or mouse.

The approach

Most players assume a keyboard, mouse or remote within reach. This one watches for the hand instead. The application is written in Python: MediaPipe's hand-tracking model finds the hand in each camera frame and returns the positions of its landmarks, the application reads those positions as gestures, and each gesture is mapped to a media-control action, so the player responds while the hand moves.

The outcome

A working gesture-controlled media player, built as Ahsan's final-year project, that turns real-time computer vision into a simple way to control playback without touching anything.

What shipped.

The capabilities that went live, one card each.

  • Hand tracking

MediaPipe follows the hand in real time, frame by frame.

  • Gesture recognition

The positions of the hand's landmarks are recognised as distinct gestures.

  • Media control

Each gesture maps to a media-control action, so playback follows the hand.
